The Lancaster Photography Darkroom runs informal and friendly photography courses throughout the year at Assembly Arts.  

​

Introduction to Black and White Photography: Monday Morning

Monday 10.00 - 1.00pm 

Starts 17 June - 4 weeks

£100.00

​

In addition to discovering the creative aspects of aperture and shutter speed, during this four week course learn how to process and print black and white 35mm film.  No previous experience is necessary as you will be guided through all aspects of developing and printing.  After taking pictures on a 35mm manual single lens reflex camera you will process the film and print from the negatives you have created.  You may use your own 35mm camera or one can be provided.

Over this fun and informal weekend learn the basics of camera operation, including shutter speed and aperture, along with how to develop and print black and white 35mm film. After taking pictures on a 35mm manual single lens reflex camera you will process the film and print from the negatives.  You may use your own camera if you have one or a 35mm camera can be provided.  No previous experience is necessary as participants will be guided through all aspects of the camera and developing and printing.

Anxious about apertures? Shy about shutter speeds? During this fun and informal workshop you'll unlock your creativity as a photographer by learning the fundamentals of camera operation. Whether you are a complete beginner, a bit rusty or would like to make the move from smartphone to camera, this one day course will give you the confidence to take great photographs.

What makes a good photograph? Why do you like some photographs more than others? Are black and white photographs better than colour? How can you learn from other photographers work to make your images better? During this friendly and informal workshop you will be guided through the fundamentals of photography, learning about the creative choices photographers make when taking pictures. Whether you take smartphone, DSLR or film photographs, this course is suitable for anyone wishing to improve their photography and build confidence talking about their images.

Learn how to shoot, process and print black and white film in a day! For those with some experience of using a 35mm camera, this fun and intensive workshop will teach you all you need to know to start processing and printing black and white photographs.  After shooting a roll of 35mm black and white film you will process the negatives before going on to experience the magic of the darkroom. This creative and exciting day makes an ideal gift for any budding photographer!

Lakes Landscape Photography Weekend

Under expert guidance during this exciting two day course you will have the opportunity to take photographs in the beautiful Lake District as well as learn about the fundamentals of landscape photography.  On day one you will travel by minibus to Great Langdale where you will take photographs in a choice of stunning locations. For those wishing to explore the fells there will be a chance to hike to Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark whilst those preferring a less challenging day will be able to explore the relatively flat Langdale valley.  In addition to finding out about the theories and history of landscape photography, on day two you will have the opportunity to share and discuss your photographs with fellow course members.  Participants will need to have a digital camera and tripod and be prepared with suitable footwear and clothing for the prevailing (and sometimes unpredictable!) weather conditions.

During this relaxed and informal workshop you will be given guidance about how to select and sequence your images to best reflect your photographic practice. Suitable for anyone who wants to show their photographs to create the best impression.

Street Photography

During this one day hands on course you will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of street photography prior to shooting on location and reviewing your results.  This workshop is a great opportunity to build confidence taking photographs of people and places under expert guidance whilst learning about aspects of street photography including personal perspectives and legal considerations.  Suitable for those with some experience of photography aged 18 and above.

Would you like to have your own photography exhibition but are not sure where to start? During this very informal and relaxed workshop you will learn all you need to know about planning and holding your first show. Topics covered include approaching venues and galleries, editing your photos, framing and presentation, writing captions, organising a private view, publicising your exhibition and where to get help with funding.  Suitable for any photographer who wants to take their work to the next level.
